IPL Laser
What Is IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses pulses of light energy to target both ocular and cosmetic concerns. Originally developed for dermatology and skin rejuvenation, IPL has been clinically proven to provide relief for patients suffering from dry eye disease, particularly when caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). At the same time, IPL treatments can also improve skin tone and texture, addressing concerns like redness, rosacea, sun damage, and fine lines.
IPL for Dry Eyes
Dry Eye Disease is a multifactorial condition affecting hundreds of millions worldwide. Dry eye disease often occurs when the meibomian glands in the eyelids become blocked or inflamed, leading to poor tear film quality. While signs of DED can vary from one patient to another, the most common form is evaporative dry eye, primarily caused by MGD1. This condition often leads to tear film instability, which IPL treatment is designed to address.
IPL therapy uses a xenon flash lamp that delivers light wavelengths between 400 and 1200 nm. This gentle energy targets abnormal blood vessels and stimulates the meibomian glands, restoring healthy oil flow and reducing inflammation. By improving oil production, IPL helps stabilize the tear film and relieve symptoms of dryness, irritation, and discomfort.
Benefits for dry eye patients include:
-
Reduction in redness and eyelid inflammation
-
Improved tear film quality and stability
-
Relief from burning, irritation, and fluctuating vision
-
Decreased dependency on artificial tears
Many patients notice improvements after just a few sessions, with results continuing to build over time.

MGD is the most common cause of dry eye disease, accounting for about 86% of cases8. The treatment addresses inflammation, which is one of the key underlying factors in MGD. OptiLIGHT was specifically developed to reach the delicate contours of the treated area safely, effectively, and gently using the OPT™ technology. What is Photorejuvenation?
Photorejuvenation refers to the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat conditions related to sun-induced skin damage. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light which is primarily absorbed by melanin and oxyhemoglobin and is effective in reducing the appearance of sun spots, capillaries, elastosis and fine lines. The unique Lumenis® IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology gently and effectively eliminates spots, discolorations, and unwanted blood vessels.
What Can I Expect After Treatment ?
Immediately following treatment, you may experience some redness, depending on your customized treatment settings. The redness will usually disappear within a few hours. In most cases, makeup may be immediately applied, and daily activities can be resumed the very same day.
Typically your physician should advise to stay out of direct sun for a few days following the treatment and to apply sun screen
What You Should Expect
The Lumenis® Optima™ IPL Photorejuvenation treatment works with your skin to remove your imperfections and stimulate collagen and elastic fiber production over a sequence of treatments. Some skin concerns such as shallow pigmentation and age/sun spots may be cleared with as few as 1-2 treatments.
Typically 2-6 sessions with 2-4 weeks in between are needed to achieve optimal results for most skin concerns.
IPL Photorejuvenation Technology
The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology allows treatment of pigmentation and vascular imperfections, while improving overall skin appearance.
Lumenis® IPL with Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) enables your clinician to customize the treatment according to your skin type and desired results. Light pulses penetrate the tissue and create heat, targeting the skin imperfection in a controlled manner. The body’s natural process then removes the treated tissue, while collagen and elastic fiber stimulation occurs, resulting in a visible improvement in skin tone and overall appearance
The Treatment
To ensure utmost comfort, your physician should apply cold coupling gel on the treatment area. Depending on your specific concern, you can expect the session to last 15-30 minutes.
You may experience a warm sensation as the light is applied to the skin, but the treatment is gentle and should not feel uncomfortable.
